PROGRAM RATIONAL
As educators, we realize the learning potential of a multidisciplinary model in education and apply the same practices to an outdoor, experience-based, global curriculum during which participants use their knowledge in real-world situations. The programs are designed to fill the gaps that are so apparent in public education and challenge students to become socially-minded independent thinkers.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Global Education Series covers three main areas: Arizona/US, Rocky Point, Mexico and Nicaragua. The programs provide unique opportunities for participants to learn about nutritional, social,
cultural, economic and environmental issues while participating in eco-adventures,
historical tours, language immersion and socially mindful projects to become globally-minded,
lifelong learners.
The true nature of the Global Education Series scaffolds student learning through a 'backyard to universe' model. Students would start by participating in local programs (see Local Ground, Unitown and Groing Green), work towards a 1-2 week program (National Ground), move into an international program in Mexico (Step Across the Border) and finally a 2-week program in Nicaragua (NicaVentura)
This is simply a recommendation. There are no prerequisites for any program and they can be taken individually.

This program combines a chronological study of Arizona history, culture,
and geography with a focus on social justice issues and environmental
education through first-hand experiences. The "Leave
No Trace" ethics are taught as participants are gently led through
activities allowing them to discover, appreciate, learn about and eventually
promote environmentally sustainable practices. Students continue
character development through facilitated group work while also being
given opportunities to take charge of their learning by presenting information. Guest speakers are invited to present to the group on a
wide range of topics as well.
National Ground 2-4
Weeks
| Outdoor Setting | Summer
Travel in the United States and visit state and national parks while
you learn about history and the environment, camp and hike. Some of our
trips trace historical events, like the civil rights movement. Others
are geared more for outdoor adventures that include biking, backpacking
and visits to the ocean. Whichever adventure you choose, you are sure
to gain a better appreciation for history and nature.
Unitown Programs (Level I & II)
Prevention programs
like Unitown are successful but students are left with a desire
to channel their knowledge. We bridge the gap between
'Prevention and Action' though programs synonymous
with Unitown. These programs also incorporate leadership
opportunities that come naturally in an outdoor setting and
then challenge students to put into practice what they have
learned.
Level I. Stand Your Ground 2 Days Camping OR 1 Day on Campus
This program offers individuals the opportunity to
explore cultural, gender and racial issues with fellow students
and their teachers. This two day camping experience will
challenge students to step outside of their comfort zones,
break down barriers and create a dialog of change and understanding
in order to establish a more enriched campus life. This is
equivalent to a Unitown but done in smaller groups.
Level II. Equal Ground 2 Days Camping OR 1 Day on Campus | Prerequisite – Level I
A continuation of Stand Your Ground, students are now challenged to
put their knowledge to use. Equal Ground dissects privilege and how
understanding this reality plays a role in building relationships with
potential allies. Our camp will begin with a few norms/definitions
and move quickly into our objective: Individuals will be able to identify/recognize
their privileges, allowing them to create common ground with fellow
students in order to create social change.
Going Green I, II, III Ongoing/Weekends
| Campus & Camping Setting
Each level of Going Green presents students with practical information
about environmental sustainability. We take a ‘backyard to
universe’ approach by first introducing simple things students
can do to minimize their impact on the environment. We then brainstorm
what types of campus projects can take place and finally, we move
into our local communities and create some partnerships with city,
state or NGO’s. Community experts are invited to facilitate
experiences as well. The ultimate goal is for students to become
active in areas in which they are passionate and for us to help them
find resources to meet their goals. Students learn how to appreciate
nature through guided activities. During the course of a weekend
students may also participate in eco-adventures such as hiking, biking,
canoeing, kayaking or photography.

Mogollon Rim/Fish Hatchery
*Covering 75% of the state, the Mogollon Rim combines Ponderosa
pine trees and pristine mountain lakes and streams. Students
will learn from AZ Game and Fish employees and will participate
in a tour of the Tonto Fish Hatchery that is only available with
our company! This trip is planned to accompany the Game and Fish
as they stock a lake with trout. |
