STEP ACROSS THE BORDER: Backyard Global Education
THE
PROGRAM
The Step Across the Border Program was designed for those learning Spanish who show an interest in traveling, improving their Spanish speaking skills, and gaining new cultural perspectives by visiting Mexico.
Program guides are bilingual and support Spanish immersion while exploring the Sea of Cortez on a boat tour, visiting the CET-MAR (oceanarium), the CEDO (The Intercultural Center for the Study of Oceans and Deserts), and the local artist and fish markets. The weekend is all about providing a safety net for new international travelers while seamlessly blending academia with language and cultural immersion. This trip is as much about traveling to learn as it is about learning to travel. We will cover crucial concepts related to cultural diversity, social perceptions, and safe travel tips that can be applied for your future trips into Central and South America.

SAMPLE ITINERARY
Each trip is customized for its participants. Transportation may or may not be included. In either case, your trip will probably begin on a Friday after work. Your group may decide to carpool or caravan to your destination in Mexico.
Day 1 - Partial (Friday Night)
•Once you arrive at your destination, you'll go out for dinner in town.
Day 2 - Saturday
• After breakfast at a local restaurant, you'll head to the Intercultural Center for the Study of Oceans and Deserts for a presentation. The Center offers various programs from a couple of hours to overnighters. All are educational and can be done in Spanish.
• If you choose a short presentation, it's probably time for lunch. We'll head back into town and choose a restaurant by the fish market, along the waterfront.
• If our accommodations are such where we can cook, the fish market will be a unique experience. If not, vendors are more than happy to lure you into their storefronts to show you the different types of seafood. You can always bring a cooler and purchase some before heading home on Sunday.
• After lunch you may want to visit the beach for some relaxation.
• Dinner will be at a local restaurant and afterwards, depending on the group, we can spend time visiting the popular night spots or head back to the hotel. |
Day 3 - Sunday
• After breakfast today participants can visit the beach or use the hotel property pools before heading into town.
• After check out, we will visit the Oceanarium. It's small but a must-see.
• We will return to town for lunch and participants will have time to shop at the market.
• Participants can also choose to take a boat ride up and down the coast of Rocky Point. Others may simply want to head back to the beach where you can not only swim but haggle with vendors selling everything from blankets to burritos.
• Your guides will be leaving Rocky Point at 4pm. You are welcome to stay or caravan back to Phoenix. |
